Tents vs Canopies?

Hi! First time bonnaroovian here. I’ll be going with about 6 people and we are bringing two cars for our camping space. I was planning on picking up a large camping tent (like 10-12 person size) for sleeping and a couple 10x10 canopy tents for daytime. However, I have been seeing a lot of people saying they will just be setting up with canopy tents and tarps. Am I not thinking of something correctly by going with a tent?
